Compare both regimes has the lower estimate
Estimated tax is ₹0 in the selected view. The difference between the new (₹0) and old (₹0) regimes is ₹0.
Review before using the estimate
- 1Separate normal slab-rate income from capital gains and other special-rate income.
- 2Enter only deductions allowed in each regime and supported by your records.
- 3Verify the tax year, residential status, and final computation on the official filing portal.
Compare eligibility and evidence for deductions before choosing a regime; the smaller number is not automatically the correct filing position.
Indian income tax estimate
Compare the default new tax regime with the old tax regime for a resident individual. The calculator applies slab rates, standard deduction, Section 87A relief, surcharge with marginal relief, and 4% health and education cess to normal slab-rate income.
What this calculator helps you check
Use it to estimate annual tax, compare regimes, understand taxable income, inspect slab-by-slab tax, and set a rough monthly tax provision before filing or discussing deductions with a tax professional.
How Indian income tax is estimated
Taxable income is gross normal income minus the applicable standard deduction and the deductions entered for each regime. Progressive slab tax is reduced by eligible Section 87A rebate or marginal relief, increased by surcharge where applicable, and then increased by 4% cess.
Variable explanations
Understand what each input and result means before calculating.
Tax year
Select the financial/tax year whose rates should be used.
Age group
Age affects the old-regime basic exemption; new-regime slabs are age-neutral.
Annual gross income
Enter normal slab-rate income before the deductions represented in this form.
Old-regime deductions
Enter only deductions and exemptions for which you are eligible and can retain evidence.
New-regime deductions
Enter only deductions specifically allowed in the new regime; many common old-regime deductions are not available.

Formula guide
See the calculation logic, variable definitions, and practical meaning.
Taxable income
Taxable income = gross normal income − standard deduction − eligible deductions
- New-regime standard deduction is ₹75,000 for eligible salary or pension income.
- Old-regime standard deduction is ₹50,000 for eligible salary or pension income.
- Other deductions are limited to the income remaining after standard deduction.
Each regime is calculated separately because available deductions differ.
Progressive slab tax
Slab tax = sum of amount within each slab × that slab rate
- Only the income within a slab is charged at that slab's rate.
Moving into a higher slab does not make all income taxable at the higher rate.
Final estimate
Total tax = (tax after rebate + surcharge) + 4% cess
- Surcharge marginal relief is applied at the applicable income thresholds.
The result remains an estimate and is not an income-tax return computation.
Worked examples
Follow realistic inputs through the calculation step by step.
Worked example
Salaried income of ₹12,75,000 under the new regime
- 1Choose salary income and enter ₹12,75,000.
- 2The ₹75,000 standard deduction reduces taxable income to ₹12,00,000.
- 3For eligible normal slab-rate income, Section 87A rebate can reduce new-regime slab tax to zero before cess.
Worked example
Compare deductions under both regimes
- 1Enter the same annual gross income for both calculations.
- 2Enter substantiated old-regime and new-regime deductions separately.
- 3Compare total tax, not just taxable income, before choosing a regime.
Common mistakes
Avoid these common input and interpretation errors.
Including special-rate income
Capital gains, lottery winnings, crypto and some other income can use separate tax rates. This estimator excludes those rules.
Claiming the same deductions in both regimes
Many deductions available under the old regime are restricted in the new regime. Use the two deduction inputs independently.
Treating the estimate as filing advice
Residential status, business income, losses, house property, agricultural income and treaty relief can materially change final tax.
Ignoring documentation
A lower estimate does not establish eligibility. Keep evidence and verify each deduction under the applicable law.
