Guide

Introduction

The APUSH Score Calculator estimates an AP United States History practice score from multiple-choice, short-answer, DBQ, and LEQ raw points. It is designed for practice planning, not official score reporting.

Purpose

Use this calculator after a practice exam, classroom mock exam, or writing practice set to understand how section performance can combine into an estimated 1-5 AP score range.

How the estimate works

The calculator applies the AP United States History section weights: multiple choice 40%, short answer 20%, DBQ 25%, and LEQ 15%. The weighted composite is mapped to transparent estimated score bands.

Variable explanations

Multiple-choice correct

Correct answers from the 55-question MCQ section.

Short-answer score

Total points from three SAQs, from 0 to 9.

DBQ score

Document-based question rubric points from 0 to 7.

LEQ score

Long essay question rubric points from 0 to 6.

Formula and method guide

Multiple-choice weighted points

MCQ points = (correct answers / 55) x 40

  • Correct answers is the number of MCQ questions answered correctly.

The multiple-choice section contributes up to 40 composite points.

Free-response weighted points

SAQ + DBQ + LEQ weighted points

  • SAQ is out of 9, DBQ is out of 7, and LEQ is out of 6.

The writing sections together contribute up to 60 composite points.

Composite estimate

Composite = MCQ + SAQ + DBQ + LEQ weighted points

  • Composite is shown out of 100.
  • Estimated AP score bands are unofficial.

The composite score is mapped to an estimated 1-5 practice range.

Common mistakes

Treating estimates as official

Actual AP score conversion can vary by exam form and year.

Entering SAQ question count

Enter total SAQ rubric points out of 9, not the number of completed questions.

Ignoring writing weight

DBQ and LEQ together are worth 40% of the exam, so writing practice can strongly affect the estimate.

Using outdated formats

Use the current 55 MCQ, 3 SAQ, DBQ, and LEQ structure for this calculator.
