Everyday guide

Introduction

A tip calculator helps you estimate gratuity, total bill amount, and each person's share when a restaurant, delivery, ride, hotel, or service bill is split between people.

What is a tip?

A tip is an optional service payment added to a bill. Tipping customs vary by country, service type, and business policy, so this calculator focuses on transparent arithmetic rather than etiquette rules.

Tip formula

Tip calculations convert a chosen percentage into a decimal, multiply it by the bill amount, add the tip to the bill, and divide the total when multiple people share the cost.

Variable explanations

Bill amount

The meal, ride, delivery, hotel, or service bill before tip.

Tip percentage

The gratuity rate applied to the bill amount.

Number of people

The number of people sharing the final bill.

Rounding mode

An optional setting that rounds either the total bill or each person's share.

Formula guide

Tip amount

Tip Amount = Bill Amount x Tip Percentage / 100

  • Bill amount is the service bill before tip.
  • Tip percentage is the chosen gratuity rate.

Convert the percentage into a decimal and multiply it by the bill amount.

Total bill including tip

Total Amount = Bill Amount + Tip Amount

  • Total amount is the bill plus the calculated tip.

Add the calculated tip to the original bill.

Split bill

Amount Per Person = Total Amount / Number of People

  • Number of people is the count of people sharing the total.
  • Each person pays the same share in this calculator.

Divide the total bill including tip by the number of people.

Rounding

Rounded Total or Rounded Per Person = nearest whole currency unit

  • Rounding mode decides whether the total or per-person amount is rounded.

Rounding is optional and can slightly change the final tip amount.

Common tipping mistakes

Using the wrong base amount

Some people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while others tip on the final bill. Use the bill amount that matches your choice.

Forgetting the split

When several people share a bill, divide the total including tip, not just the original bill.

Mixing percent and currency

A tip percentage is not the same as a fixed tip amount. This calculator uses percentages only.

Ignoring automatic service charges

Some restaurants add gratuity or service charges automatically, especially for larger groups.

Rounding without noticing the effect

Rounding the total or per-person amount can slightly increase or decrease the effective tip.
