Introduction

The Gematria Calculator converts English words and phrases into numeric totals using common letter-value ciphers.

The calculator counts A-Z letters, ignores spaces and punctuation, assigns each letter a value for each cipher, and sums the values.

Formula and method guide

English ordinal

A = 1, B = 2, ... Z = 26

This is often called simple or ordinal English gematria.

Reverse ordinal

A = 26, B = 25, ... Z = 1

This mirrors the ordinal system from the opposite end of the alphabet.

Reduction

A-I = 1-9, J-R = 1-9, S-Z = 1-8

This is a compact form sometimes called full reduction or Pythagorean reduction.

Variables

Phrase

The word, name, or sentence entered by the user.

Letters counted

A-Z letters included in the total.

Ordinal

Alphabet-position values from 1 to 26.

Reverse

Reverse alphabet-position values from 26 to 1.

Sumerian

English ordinal values multiplied by 6.

FAQs

What does this Gematria Calculator calculate?
It calculates English ordinal, reverse ordinal, English reduction, reverse reduction, and English sumerian totals.
What characters are counted?
Only A-Z letters are counted. Spaces, punctuation, numbers, and symbols are ignored.
Is capitalization important?
No. Uppercase and lowercase letters are treated the same.
What is English ordinal gematria?
English ordinal assigns A=1, B=2, and so on through Z=26.
What is reverse ordinal gematria?
Reverse ordinal assigns A=26, B=25, and so on through Z=1.
What is English reduction?
English reduction repeats values 1 through 9 across the alphabet.
What is reverse reduction?
Reverse reduction applies the 1 through 9 reduction pattern to reverse alphabet values.
What is English sumerian gematria?
English sumerian multiplies each English ordinal value by 6.
Does this support Hebrew gematria?
No. This version focuses on English A-Z ciphers only.
Does this support Greek isopsephy?
No. Greek and Hebrew systems require separate alphabet handling and are out of scope for this version.
Why do other calculators show different values?
Different calculators may use different ciphers, letter tables, alphabets, or matching databases.
Can I see the letter-by-letter math?
Yes. The result includes a letter breakdown table for each supported cipher.
Is gematria a scientific method?
No. This calculator provides arithmetic totals, not scientific or interpretive proof.
Can I use full sentences?
Yes. The calculator counts the letters in the sentence and ignores non-letter characters.
What is the character limit?
Use 200 characters or fewer.
