Indian TDS calculator for common resident payments
Estimate tax deducted at source for interest, contracts, commission, rent, professional or technical services, dividends, partner payments, property, goods purchases, virtual digital assets and winnings. Each preset shows the rate, threshold and applicable old/current Act reference.
What the TDS estimate tells you
The result shows whether the selected threshold is met, the amount subject to TDS, rate applied, tax to deduct and net payment. It is designed for arithmetic and first-pass compliance checks, not as a substitute for determining legal deductor liability.
TDS formula and threshold logic
For most presets, TDS equals the amount subject to deduction multiplied by the rate. Some sections apply to the full current payment after an annual or monthly threshold is crossed, contractor payments also have a single-payment test, and purchase-of-goods TDS applies only to the portion crossing ₹50 lakh.
Variable explanations
Understand what each input and result means before calculating.
Payment tax year
This controls whether the result displays the Income-tax Act, 1961 section or the corresponding Income-tax Act, 2025 table reference.
Current payment
The amount paid or credited now; TDS timing commonly follows the earlier applicable payment/credit event.
Financial-year aggregate
Total covered payments to the recipient during the tax year, including the current payment.
PAN availability
Missing PAN can trigger a higher deduction rate even where the standard rate is lower.

Formula guide
See the calculation logic, variable definitions, and practical meaning.
Standard payment
TDS = amount subject to deduction × TDS rate ÷ 100
- The threshold determines whether the current payment is subject to deduction.
The net payment is current payment minus estimated TDS.
Purchase of goods
TDS base = portion of annual purchases exceeding ₹50,00,000
- The payer must independently satisfy the statutory turnover and applicability conditions.
Unlike most presets, this calculation taxes only the excess portion attributable to the current payment.
PAN not available
Applicable rate = higher statutory PAN-missing rate
- Most listed resident payments use at least 20%; certain provisions use a specific lower higher-rate rule.
The preset handles the common rate change but cannot determine PAN validity or every statutory exception.
Worked examples
Follow realistic inputs through the calculation step by step.
Worked example
Professional fee of ₹80,000
- 1Choose Professional services and enter ₹80,000 for the current payment and annual aggregate.
- 2The ₹50,000 annual threshold is crossed.
- 3At 10%, estimated TDS is ₹8,000 and net payment is ₹72,000.
Worked example
Contractor single payment below the annual threshold
- 1Choose the contractor payee type.
- 2A current payment above ₹30,000 triggers the single-payment test even if annual payments have not crossed ₹1,00,000.
- 3The selected 1% or 2% rate is applied to the current payment.
Worked example
Purchase of goods crossing ₹50 lakh
- 1Enter the current payment and financial-year aggregate including it.
- 2The calculator isolates the part of the current payment that pushes purchases above ₹50 lakh.
- 3It applies 0.1% to that excess portion when PAN is available.
Common mistakes
Avoid these common input and interpretation errors.
Using old section numbers after 1 April 2026
Current transactions use the Income-tax Act, 2025 table references. The calculator displays both old and current references for the selected year.
Confusing a threshold with an exemption
For several payment types, crossing the threshold makes the current payment subject to TDS; it does not always mean only the excess is taxed.
Ignoring payer and recipient conditions
Turnover, tax-audit status, residency, entity type, certificates and statutory exclusions can determine whether a section applies.
Adding cess to resident TDS automatically
Surcharge and cess generally are not added to the listed resident TDS rates. Non-resident withholding needs a separate computation.
