Paint planning beyond a single coverage number

The Paint Calculator converts rectangular-room dimensions into net wall and optional ceiling area, subtracts standard doors, windows, and custom openings, then applies separate wall, ceiling, and primer coat counts. It reports liquid demand, whole containers, expected leftover, cost, and coverage sensitivity in metric or imperial units.


When to use this calculator

Use it before requesting quotes or buying interior paint for one or more identical rooms. The result is most useful when you have the coverage value from the exact finish paint and primer, know the likely coat count, and can measure unusually large openings. It is an estimating aid, not a substitute for product instructions or a site inspection.


How the paint estimate works

Gross wall area is the room perimeter multiplied by height. Door, window, and custom opening area is deducted before multiplying by wall coats. Ceiling area is length multiplied by width and is included only when ceiling coats are above zero. Coated area is divided by product coverage, the selected allowance is added, and the liquid volume is rounded up to whole containers. Primer follows the same surface-and-coverage method but remains separate from finish paint.

📐 Room dimensions

Measure length, width, and floor-to-ceiling height inside the room. For irregular rooms, divide the project into rectangular zones and calculate each zone separately.

🚪 Doors and 🪟 windows

Standard counts use 1.9 m² per door and 1.4 m² per window. Enter additional uncovered area when openings are substantially larger, or set standard counts to zero and place the measured total in the custom field.

🖌️ Finish coats

The calculator accepts separate wall and ceiling coat counts. One coat may be enough for a compatible refresh, while new drywall, porous surfaces, repairs, or a strong colour change may need more. Follow the product label.

🛡️ Primer coats

Primer is calculated over every physical surface selected for finish paint. Enter zero only when the substrate, preparation, and chosen coating system do not require a separate primer.

📋 Product coverage

Coverage should come from the exact product data sheet or can. Metric mode expects square metres per litre; imperial mode expects square feet per US gallon. Real coverage can be lower on porous or textured surfaces.

➕ Allowance

Allowance is added after coverage is calculated. It creates a buffer for tray and roller loss, cutting-in, surface variation, small measurement errors, and matching touch-ups.

🪣 Container size

The main shopping result rounds both finish paint and primer to the container size entered. The comparison table also shows the effect of common single-size packs, without assuming local prices.

💰 Cost inputs

Enter finish-paint, primer, and labour prices in Indian rupees. Labour is applied to physical paintable area once, not multiplied by coats; use a contractor quote instead if labour is priced differently.

Gross wall area

2 × (room length + room width) × wall height × room count

This treats each room as a rectangle with four vertical walls.

Net wall area

Gross wall area − door area − window area − custom opening area

  • Each standard door uses 1.9 m²
  • Each standard window uses 1.4 m²
  • Custom openings capture unusually sized uncovered areas

Openings are deducted before coats are applied so uncovered surfaces do not consume paint.

Finish-paint volume

[(net wall area × wall coats) + (ceiling area × ceiling coats)] ÷ coverage × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)

Paint cannot normally be purchased as an exact fractional container, so the shopping quantity is rounded up.

Mixing units

Imperial mode expects feet, square feet per US gallon, and US gallons. Metric mode expects metres, square metres per litre, and litres.

Using floor area as wall area

Floor area does not account for wall height. Wall area comes from perimeter multiplied by height.

Forgetting the coat multiplier

Two finish coats require roughly twice the coated area of one coat, even though the physical wall area is unchanged.

Subtracting every small opening

Tiny vents or fixtures may save little paint and can be offset by cutting-in loss. Deduct meaningful uncovered areas consistently.

Using a generic coverage value instead of the product label

Coverage varies by formulation and substrate. The exact product guidance is more reliable than a universal assumption.

Treating primer as finish paint

Primer and finish paint can have different coverage, prices, purposes, and required coat counts, so they are calculated separately.

Ignoring texture and porosity

Rough masonry, unsealed plaster, new drywall, and heavily repaired surfaces can absorb more coating than a smooth sealed wall.

Buying the exact liquid result

The theoretical litres or gallons do not reflect available packs. Use the rounded shopping quantity and review its leftover.

Assuming every room is identical

Room count multiplies one geometry and one opening pattern. Calculate different rooms separately when dimensions vary materially.

Forgetting preparation cost

Cleaning, sanding, crack repair, masking, tools, access equipment, and disposal can be material parts of the project budget.

Why are whole containers higher than the liquid estimate?
The exact demand is rounded up because paint is sold in fixed pack sizes. The difference appears as estimated leftover.
Can I calculate several rooms at once?
Yes, when the rooms have the same dimensions and opening counts. Calculate dissimilar rooms separately and combine their shopping requirements carefully.
Does the result work for exterior paint?
The area math can help, but this room model assumes rectangular walls and standard interior openings. Exterior elevations, gables, trim, siding profiles, access, weather, and product systems need separate review.
Does the cost include tools and preparation?
No. The cost combines entered finish-paint, primer, and optional area-based labour only. Add preparation, repairs, masking, tools, equipment, delivery, and taxes separately.
What does the coverage sensitivity table show?
It compares the entered coverage with 15% lower and 15% higher coverage to show whether surface performance could change the required liquid or whole-container count.
Is the calculator result exact?
No. It is a measurement-based planning estimate. Actual use depends on surface condition, texture, colour, product, application method, painter technique, and jobsite losses.
