Introduction

The Gravel Calculator estimates cubic yards, tons, waste-adjusted tons, and optional material cost for driveways, paths, drainage areas, parking pads, garden beds, and base layers.

The calculator multiplies length by width to find area, converts depth from inches to feet, calculates cubic feet, divides by 27 for cubic yards, then multiplies by tons per cubic yard.

Formula and method guide

Cubic yards

Cubic yards = length x width x depth(ft) / 27

Cubic yards are a common bulk material volume unit.

Tons

Tons = cubic yards x tons per cubic yard

Many suppliers sell gravel by weight, so density matters.

Tons with waste

Tons with waste = tons x (1 + waste / 100)

Waste is added after the base ton estimate.

Variables

Length

The project length in feet.

Width

The project width in feet.

Depth

The planned gravel depth in inches.

Tons per cubic yard

The material density factor used to convert cubic yards to tons.

Waste allowance

Optional extra material for compaction, uneven areas, and supplier rounding.

Price per ton

Optional material price used only for a rough cost estimate.

FAQs

What does this Gravel Calculator calculate?
It estimates area, cubic feet, cubic yards, gravel tons, tons with waste, and optional material cost.
What formula is used?
Cubic yards equals length times width times depth in feet divided by 27. Tons equals cubic yards times tons per cubic yard.
Why is depth entered in inches?
Gravel layers are often planned in inches, so the calculator converts inches to feet internally.
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.
How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel?
Many gravel products are roughly 1.4 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard, but the exact value depends on the material.
What density should I use?
Use your supplier's density when available. The default 1.5 tons per cubic yard is a planning assumption.
Does this calculate pea gravel?
Yes, if you enter dimensions and a suitable density factor for pea gravel.
Does this calculate crushed stone?
Yes, if you use the appropriate tons-per-cubic-yard factor for that material.
Should I add waste?
Usually yes. Waste helps account for compaction, uneven ground, and ordering variation.
Does this include delivery cost?
No. Optional cost uses material price only and excludes delivery, tax, labor, and equipment.
Can this calculate a circular area?
This version estimates rectangular areas. Use the Cubic Yard Calculator for circular volume estimates.
Can this calculate multiple layers?
Calculate each layer separately if depth or material density differs.
Is this exact?
No. It is a planning estimate and should be confirmed with your supplier.
Why do suppliers sell by ton?
Aggregates are often loaded and priced by weight, even though project dimensions start as volume.
Can I use this for sand or soil?
The math is similar, but use a material-specific density or calculator when possible.
