A flooring takeoff built around cartons, cuts, and accessories
The Flooring Calculator estimates laminate, LVP/LVT, engineered wood, solid hardwood, bamboo, and cork plank floors in metric or imperial units. It converts measured floor area into pattern-adjusted order area and whole boxes, while keeping planned cutting waste separate from the additional surplus created by carton rounding.
When to use this calculator
Use it to prepare a material list, compare products with different box coverage, test waste assumptions, or check a contractor quote. It also estimates underlay rolls, skirting or perimeter trim, doorway transitions, installation labour, old-floor removal, and subfloor preparation. Carpet rolls and ceramic tile use different layout and accessory rules and should be calculated separately.
How the flooring order is calculated
The calculator totals room rectangles, adds measured closets or extra rectangles, and subtracts meaningful non-floor areas. The selected material and installation pattern establish a planning allowance, with an optional five-point increase for complex rooms. The adjusted area is divided by the exact coverage printed on the carton and rounded up to whole boxes.
Variable explanations
Understand what each input and result means before calculating.
📐 Room rectangles
Measure the longest wall-to-wall length and width. For an L-shaped room, add the smaller rectangle under Additional measured area or calculate it as a separate job.
🚫 Non-floor area
Subtract fixed islands, hearths, or built-ins only when flooring will not run underneath. Do not subtract movable furniture.
🪵 Flooring material
Material changes the straight-run planning allowance. Solid hardwood receives more reserve for length variation, defects, grading, and colour selection than click-lock laminate or LVP.
↗️ Installation pattern
Straight or staggered runs usually create fewer perimeter cuts. Diagonal runs require more edge cuts, while herringbone or chevron introduces repeated angled cuts and a larger allowance.
📦 Carton coverage
Enter the exact coverage printed on the selected box. Coverage varies by brand, collection, plank dimensions, and pack count, even within one material category.
📏 Plank dimensions
Plank length and width power the layout cross-check and approximate plank count. Purchasing still follows carton coverage because mixed-length hardwood and pack construction can make face-area counts approximate.
🧻 Underlay
Enter the installed coverage per roll. Use zero when the manufacturer confirms that separate underlay is not needed. A moisture or vapour barrier may still be required over some subfloors.
🧱 Skirting and trim
The calculator estimates rectangular perimeter, deducts entered doorway width, and adds five percent. It does not know alcoves, columns, cabinetry returns, mitres, stairs, or wall irregularities.
🚪 Transitions
Count thresholds, T-mouldings, reducers, end caps, or other floor-to-floor changes. Stair nosing and complex profiles should be measured separately.

Net floor area
(room length × room width × identical rooms) + additional area − non-floor area
- Length and width describe one rectangular room
- Non-floor area is entered per identical room
- Additional area combines closets or extra rectangles
Net area is the physical floor receiving the finish and the basis for underlay, labour, removal, and preparation.
Waste-adjusted order area
net floor area × (1 + applied allowance ÷ 100)
- Straight allowances vary by material
- Diagonal and herringbone use higher minimum allowances
- Complex-room mode adds five percentage points
The allowance covers cuts, defects, grading or colour selection, mistakes, and a practical reserve.
Whole-box order
boxes = ceiling(waste-adjusted area ÷ exact carton coverage)
- Carton coverage comes from the exact SKU label
- Every partial carton rounds up
- Purchased coverage equals boxes × carton coverage
This is the purchase-driving result. Pack coverage is more reliable than assuming a generic plank count per box.
Surplus split
total surplus = planned cutting allowance + carton-rounding extra
- Planned waste is adjusted area minus net area
- Carton extra is purchased coverage minus adjusted area
- Both quantities remain visible rather than becoming one hidden percentage
The split explains why purchased coverage can exceed the selected waste percentage and helps identify repair stock.
Accessories
underlay rolls = ceiling(net area × 1.05 ÷ roll coverage); trim pieces = ceiling(perimeter × 1.05 ÷ piece length)
- Underlay includes a five-percent overlap and cutting allowance
- Doorway width is deducted from the rectangular room perimeter
- Transitions are entered as whole doorway or reducer locations

Common mistakes
Avoid these common input and interpretation errors.
Using a generic coverage per box
Carton coverage varies by exact product. A small assumption error multiplied across many boxes can cause a short order.
Rounding each room when boxes can be shared
Separate room rounding can overstate boxes when one SKU and dye lot are used throughout. Combine areas when material and offcuts genuinely transfer.
Combining rooms that use different products
Different flooring SKUs, colours, plank sizes, or carton coverage values require separate calculations.
Adding the waste percentage twice
The adjusted area already contains the selected allowance. Whole-box surplus is displayed separately and should not be added again.
Treating carton surplus as unusable waste
Unopened boxes or matching full planks can become valuable repair stock. Store them flat and according to the manufacturer guidance.
Ignoring the direction of the planks
Changing direction changes rows, end cuts, transitions, and appearance even when total square area stays the same.
Subtracting every obstacle
Flooring may run under appliances or movable cabinets. Small cut-outs can also consume nearly the same material as the surrounding floor.
Skipping the subfloor assessment
Flatness, dryness, strength, contamination, movement, and moisture control can affect installation suitability and cost more than box arithmetic.
Assuming attached pad solves moisture
Attached acoustic pad and a subfloor moisture or vapour barrier are not always equivalent. Follow the flooring and subfloor system instructions.
Forgetting trim and transitions
Skirting, quarter-round, reducers, T-mouldings, thresholds, stair nosing, end caps, and profiles are separate purchase items.
Mixing measurement systems
Room dimensions use metres or feet, while plank dimensions use millimetres or inches. Follow the selected system and each field description.
Ordering different production batches
Shade, gloss, embossing, grain, dimensions, or locking profiles can vary. Order together and inspect batch or dye-lot information.
