Landscape estimate

Introduction

The Mulch Calculator estimates how much mulch is needed for rectangular garden beds, landscape areas, paths, or planting areas from length, width, and depth.

Multiply bed area by mulch depth in feet to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards, then add any waste or settling allowance.

Formula and method guide

Cubic feet

Cubic Feet = Length(ft) x Width(ft) x Depth(ft)

This estimates volume for one rectangular bed.

Cubic yards

Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet / 27

Bulk mulch is often ordered by cubic yard.

Bag count

Bags = Cubic Feet with Waste / Bag Size

Round up because partial bags are not usually purchased.

Variables

Length

The long side of the rectangular bed or landscape area.

Width

The short side of the bed or landscape area.

Depth

The mulch layer thickness in inches.

Bag size

The volume of one bag in cubic feet.

Waste

Extra allowance for settling, uneven beds, and ordering margin.

FAQs

What does this Mulch Calculator calculate?
It estimates cubic feet, cubic yards, waste-adjusted cubic yards, bag count, coverage per cubic yard, and optional bulk cost.
How do you calculate mulch?
Multiply length by width by depth in feet, then divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards.
How many cubic feet are in one cubic yard?
There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard.
How many 2 cubic foot bags are in a cubic yard?
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it equals 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags before rounding.
How deep should mulch be?
Many landscape references use about 2 to 4 inches, but the right depth depends on material and planting context.
Does this calculate circular beds?
No. This first version is for rectangular beds.
Can I calculate multiple beds?
Yes, use quantity for identical beds or calculate different beds separately.
Does this include soil or compost?
It can estimate rectangular volume, but soil and compost may have different settling and ordering rules.
Can I estimate cost?
Yes, enter an optional price per cubic yard for a rough bulk cost estimate.
Does this include delivery fees?
No. Delivery, tax, labor, and supplier minimums are not included.
Why add waste allowance?
Waste allowance helps account for uneven beds, settling, spreading, and supplier rounding.
Can I use this for playground mulch?
Use caution. Playground surfacing may have safety depth and material requirements beyond this calculator.
What if my bed is irregular?
Split it into rectangles, calculate each area, and add the results.
Is bag size always 2 cubic feet?
No. Many bags are 2 cubic feet, but check the label and enter the actual bag size.
Is this gardening advice?
No. It is a volume planning calculator, not horticultural or landscape design advice.
